Watch This Doula Spontaneously Deliver A Baby In Her Client's Apartment

Mini Doc by Emma Betuel and Caroline Lee at Columbia University

Nationally, black mothers are four times more likely than white mothers to die in childbirth. In New York City, they're TWELVE times more likely to die. We interviewed a mother who experienced racism in the healthcare system and talked to doulas who want to advocate for women of color. A mini-doc made with Emma Betuel and Caroline Lee.

Rada Film Group for Planned Parenthood “Birthing A Mother”

April 2019

A beautiful piece as part of the #weareunstoppable art series. I'm proud to share this piece to honor the 2nd National Black Maternal Health Week led by Black Mamas Matter Alliance to promote maternal health, rights, and justice for Black mamas. Birthing A Mother - Michele Stephenson, Rada Film Group

Our short film explores alternate approaches to the traditional often harmful and discriminatory obstetrics care that Black mothers receive over the course of their pregnancy and postpartum experiences. Through the lens of a doula who advocates for Black women and works to improve the birth outcomes for women of color and their newborns, we learn about how Black women are creating greater agency over their experiences as expectant mothers. We follow Emilie, a NYC-based doula, throughout the course of her workday and learn about how she helps Black women through pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. In the process, we dispel myths about the high cost of doula care, presenting it as a viable option for Black women who have been historically susceptible to subpar reproductive healthcare.
